About the course

This training is mandatory for anyone working with gaming machines in NSW. It provides practical skills to promote responsible gambling, minimise harm, and comply with legal requirements.

To obtain a Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG) competency under the new RCG training framework, you need to:

  • complete an RCG course with an Approved Training Provider and

  • pass the L&GNSW RCG online assessment.

You must successfully complete the assessment before you can get your RCG Interim Certificate which is then used to apply for your RCG competency card.

  • The program is designed to give you mandatory skills and knowledge required to provide responsible gambling services and to assist those who may be at risk of or are already experiencing harm from gambling.

    • Gaming room attendants

    • Managers

    • Security Officers

    RCG training is mandatory if your work duties involve gaming machines.

    The training applies to:

    • Staff with gaming machine duties

    • Staff who patrol or serve in a gaming machine area

    • Staff who pay out winnings

    • Licensees with a full hotel licence

    • Secretaries of a registered club

    • Directors of registered clubs with gaming machines, unless they have completed Responsible Gambling Board Oversight training (from 30 June 2025)

    • Directors of companies that own hotels with gaming machines, who are involved in the operations of hotels (from 30 June 2025)

    • Responsible Gambling Officers (RGOs)

    Any person planning to enrol in Advanced Responsible Conduct of Gambling (ARCG) training

    If you hold a current RCG Competency card you must renew with Liquor and Gaming NSW. Renewals can be completed online in the 90 days before your current card expires.

    ‍Legislation requires refresher training every five (5) years. This must be undertaken through Liquor & Gaming before expiry. If you hold a current RCG Competency card you must renew with Liquor and Gaming NSW.‍ ‍

  • The Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG) training is the foundation that qualifies you to carry out work in relation to gaming machines. 

    The RCG course is designed to 

    • clarify the roles, responsibilities and expectations of working with gaming machines, as well as the laws relating to responsible gambling practices 

    • provide a clear idea of what is expected of you in the workplace 

    • provide a greater understanding of how you as a staff member can promote responsible gambling behaviours and minimise gambling harm in gaming venues. 

    The RCG course covers:

    • Gambling in Australia and NSW

    • Defining and understanding gambling harm

    • Responsible gambling and harm minimisation measures

    • Interacting with patrons and the ‘RAAR’ framework

    • Responsible conduct of gambling in practiceOn successful completion you will receive a Statement of Attainment for SITHGAM022. You will then be required to complete an additional online Liquor & Gaming assessment containing 30 questions, with 100% pass rate (multiple attempts will be allowed).

    On successful completion Liquor & Gaming will issue and interim certificate. When you receive your interim certificate, you will need to take it to Service NSW with 100pts of I.D. You must do this within 90days to receive your RCG Competency card. Please note that RCG legislation is different for other states/territories. You must check with the relevant state or territory to see if your RCG competency card is recognised.

  • Students must bring:

    • Photo identification (license or passport)

    • A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI)

    • Pen and paper to make notes and complete assessment activities

    • Comfortable clothing and flat and enclosed shoes for working in the training area

    • LAPTOP/TABLET (If Available)

    • read and interpret at times complex information, deal courteously and discreetly with customers, seek assistance from appropriate colleagues and use a computer and appropriate software
